i visited my old primary school today

and it was the sweetest thing. i haven’t been there in eight years, so to walk into the lobby and through the corridors was so, so weird - i went there between the ages of four and eleven, and that portion of my life came flooding right back to me. half my old teachers still work there, and they couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw me - but that was nothing compared to the kids’ reactions. i was there to help make scenery and props for their school play (which is all about the beatles - how awesome is that?), and when i walked into the classroom with my mum (who works there), all these little girls gathered round me going “ooh, who are you?” and staring with fascination at my hair and clothes. i went to paint props in a quiet side-room, and this one little boy peeped in, took one look at me and ran off to tell his friends, going, “WHOA, come and look at this pretty lady!”. they all proceeded to peep in at me, going “oooooh!”. i felt like an exhibition at the zoo, but it absolutely made my day.

i’ve just been reminiscing about my school years, and how me and my friends once renamed every subject on our timetables to hogwarts classes:

  • maths = arithmancy
  • physics = astronomy
  • chemistry = potions
  • biology = herbology/care of magical creatures
  • history = history of magic
  • english = ancient runes
  • p.e. = flying class
  • geography = muggle studies

and i’m sure there were more! we were the coolest kids.

19. your favourite subject to study

in school, geography and science were my two loves; despite often having totally incapable teachers, the subjects still enthralled me and i worked hard at them to reach a level of understanding good enough to help me get the top grades. moving onto college, i took geography, physics and chemistry a-levels - coming out with an even increased passion for the subjects and grades more than good enough to get into university on an earth science masters degree. earth science incorporates my three college subjects beautifully into one; it’s the study of the earth, how it came to be, the history of life, what it’s made from and the processes that shape it. it’s the origin of the universe, it’s spewing lava, it’s dinosaurs and gigantic forces. i’m totally in my geeky element.

well, university is!
today is the most beautiful day in the world. it’s warm, it’s sunny, the trees are singing, the sky is clear, and half of cardiff has donned their flip-flops and bermuda shorts. we had our last lecture of the year at twelve, and escaped into the glorious sunshine with a little dancey. we celebrated with a pint and some foodies at the local (which is why i am very jolly right now, by the way) and i am very much looking forward to the night’s cheeky paddy’s day activities. we’re holding the shenanigans in our flat, and as a leprechaun myself i will be proud to wear my irish hat and beard for all to tug on and enjoy.

i have an assignment to do before that, and a trip down some caves tomorrow morning - but nothing can dampen my mood!

watching harry potter just made me recall the best thing ever

several years ago, while i was still in school, i was waiting for the deputy head outside her office when i overheard a group of year eight boys talking in the corridor. the conversation went a bit like this:

boy one: “did you know, j. k. rowling came here a couple of years ago to open the new library because she went to this school. my brother told me. nobody saw her, though!”
boy two: “maybe she apparated!”
boy three: “don’t be stupid, sam; you can’t apparate within school grounds.”

best. kids. ever.
