from my lecturer’s academic biography on the university website

“At the weekend I try to escape to any nice pub in South Wales’ mountains (in the winter). In the summer, I try to find any nice pub (again!) as close to the sea as physically possible. My daughter and wife normally follow me in this quest of finding the best pub in Wales.

well, that escalated quickly

i just took some (super cute) foraminifera to be identified by a professor who is one of the world’s leading experts in the little beasties

they ended up being something he’d never seen before, and also offered me a fourth-year project which will place me as co-author (or even main author, if what i find is snazzy enough) on a very publishable paper!

and now i get to go home and hug my cat, so today is just fab

and in three weeks i head to cyprus, plus at the start of next year we’re probably going to naples (or an equally fab mediterranean location)

death by geology

one week ‘til the deadline and my brain is a poor crispy fried thing!

to put this in context for ya, after spending six weeks trundling around 25km2 of the french countryside recording types of rock as coloured blobs on a huge map, we now have to figure out where the hell the boundaries go, how each rock type relates to the others in terms of age and processes, and deduce what it all looks like as an underground cross-section

being a rock detective is tough sometimes you guys

tropical sand magnified 250 times
dr gary greenberg’s sand photography
in the tropics, beach sand tends to be completely biogenic - the whole beach is comprised of microscopic shells, coral fragments and glassy sponge spicules, which have been washed ashore from reefs.
we got to study this as geology freshers, it was amazing ♥

forty degrees celcius

i never thought i’d be able to cope in this weather, especially not with having to walk 10km a day hammering at rocks

but we’re doing great, our maps are taking shape, and the camping life is still fabuloso. i’ve taken a ton of photos which i’ll prep and post as soon as i can get my laptop charged enough to last more than ten minutes! blimey

we went to the local music festival the other night for some reggae, amazing. walking the 6km there and back with only beer for sustenance was so very worth it ♥
